Three Gray pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout of Maroon Saturday in Mississippi State’s 14th scrimmage of the fall. The six-inning exhibition took place at Dudy Noble Field.
Junior left-hander Daniel Brown dazzled Maroon hitters early, striking out five with zero walks in three innings of work. Redshirt junior right-hander Paul Young relieved Brown in the fourth and fanned four batters over the next two stanzas. Junior righty Logan Elliot picked up the save with a scoreless sixth.
Deadlocked in a scoreless tie in the fourth, sophomore transfer Jacob Barfield launched a no-doubt home run to the Left Field Lounge to give Gray a 1-0 lead. The victors added an insurance run in the fifth when a sacrifice fly from redshirt junior outfielder Jacob Robson scored senior catcher Josh Lovelady.
Junior righty Dakota Hudson earned a no decision in the loss, tossing three shutout innings in the start for Maroon. Redshirt junior Cody Brown was the highlight on offense for the visitors, going 2 for 2 with a stolen base.
