Mississippi State is coming off three straight losing seasons but a new coach and a talented freshman have raised expectations in Starkville.

The Bulldogs were picked to finish eighth in the Southeastern Conference by the media while freshman guard Malik Newman was voted second team All-SEC.

It’s an honor,” Newman said in a release. “I see the list and I see a lot of great players. I look forward to competing against these guys every night.”

Ben Howland‘s team received 203 points, one behind South Carolina and 19 ahead of in-state rival Ole Miss. Kentucky was picked to win the conference again with 406 points.

Newman, a 6-foot-3 guard from Jackson, averaged 29.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists as a senior at Callaway High School last year and played in the McDonalds All-American game.

LSU true freshman Ben Simmons was selected as the Preseason SEC Player of the Year.
