A day after Mississippi State’s Quinndary Weatherspoon was named the SEC men’s basketball freshman of the week, Teaira McCowan received the same honor from the women’s side.

The 6-foot-7 center from Brenham, Texas averaged 15 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks last week with three straight double-doubles in Bulldog wins over Mississippi Valley State, Norfolk State and Savannah State.

McCowan is currently second on the team in scoring with 13.6 points and is the top rebounder with 9.4 boards.

McCowan is the first MSU player to earn SEC Freshman of the Week since Victoria Vivians won it four times last season and Morgan William did so twice.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
