Mississippi State held its second practice in preparation for the Belk Bowl on Saturday morning. I missed most of practice while working on the Gerri Green and DeAndre Ward arrest story. I did make it out in time for the scrimmage portion of practice which is the most entertaining part anyways.

Here are a few observations I jotted down in my notebook while I was out there.

Redshirt freshman running back Aeris Williams had a nice touchdown run.

Junior safety Deontay Evans batted down a pass by redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Fitzgerald.

Junior defensive tackle Nick James did not have on shoulder pads and did not participate in drills.

Former Tupelo and MSU wide receiver Chad Bumphis was on hand at practice.

The Bulldogs had a bunch of official visitors out at practice – four-star cornerback John Broussard, four-star defensive end Emmitt Gooden, three-star wide receiver Velus Jones Jr., unranked wide receiver Justin Mcinnis and commitments Drelan Porter, Lashard Durr, Dontea Jones, C.J. Morgan-Walker, Christian Roberson and Tre Brown.

Junior quarterback Damian Williams had an excellent completion to freshman tight end Justin Johnson across the middle.

As you saw in the video earlier, safeties coach Tony Hughes was back at practice.

Freshman wide receiver Deddrick Thomas had a great diving catch along the right sideline on a pass from freshman quarterback Nick Tiano.

Junior tight end Gus Walley and senior defensive end Ryan Brown were both there but obviously not dressed out after Dan Mullen‘s announcement on Friday that they would not play in the bowl due to injury.

Freshman wide receiver Keith Mixon made a one-handed grab along the left sideline on a pass from Williams.

Freshman cornerback Chris Stamps was back wearing a red jersey and did not participate in drills.

Freshman running back Nick Gibson attempted to leap over redshirt freshman safety Zak Neary but Neary upended Gibson on the play.

I saw senior long snapper Winston Chapman getting a few snaps in on another field while the scrimmage was going on. Chapman was not dressed out and was still wearing a brace on his left knee.

Redshirt freshman cornerback Chris Rayford jumped a route to intercept Tiano.

Redshirt freshman running back Dontavian Lee fumbled an option pitch by Tiano. Tiano recovered the fumble and took a shot from freshman linebacker Leo Lewis in the process.

Redshirt freshman safety Brandon Bryant missed the practice due to the death of his father last week in a motorcycle accident. Bryant is expected back next week.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.

I guess the arrest story was very important.
