Mississippi State held its fifth bowl practice on Tuesday morning and final one in Starkville that will be open to the public and media. I don’t have quite as many notes for you due to a men’s basketball press conference with Ben Howland and Malik Newman scheduled for the same time.

But here are a few things I jotted down in my notebook while I was out there for the final few periods of football practice.

It was the Bulldogs’ first practice in full pads during bowl prep.

Junior defensive tackle Nick James dressed out fully and participated for the first time since practices began last Friday.

Freshman wide receiver Malik Dear was in the injury pit and did not practice. Yesterday, I reported that Dear had an ice bag on his right ankle at the end of practice.

During 7-on-7 drills, junior cornerback Tolando Cleveland broke up a pass by freshman quarterback Nick Tiano.

Safeties coach Tony Hughes, redshirt freshman quarterback Elijah Staley and redshirt freshman safety Brandon Bryant were not at practice.

Head coach Dan Mullen spent the entire scrimmage helping defensive quality control coach Ephraim Banda with the safeties.

During the scimmage, junior defensive end Johnathan Calvin batted down a pass by redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Fitzgerald at the line of scrimmage.

Junior linebackers Richie Brown and Beniquez Brown both got in a few reps in the scrimmage.

The offense had some fun by running a flea flicker with quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson, who rolled right and completed to freshman wide receiver Jonnas Spivey.

The defense ran a few plays out of a 3-3-5 look.

I saw Richie Brown go over to the sideline to sneak a kiss from his wife, Erin, during the scrimmage.

After practice each day, there are dozens upon dozens of fans who line up for autographs and pictures with senior quarterback Dak Prescott. Although it takes him an extra 30-45 minutes to get to the locker room, Prescott makes sure he obliges each fan before he leaves.
