John Michael Hankerson is coming home for college.

The three-star athlete is from Starkville but has spent the last two years living in South Bend, Indiana. Hankerson committed to Mississippi State while on an official visit over the weekend, choosing the Bulldogs over offers from Bowling Green, Illinois State, Indiana, Miami (OH) and Western Michigan.

The 6-foot-1, 170-pounder starred in all three phases at South Bend Washington – rushing 14 times for 155 yards and a touchdown, catching 27 passes for 547 yards and six touchdowns, making 77 tackles, two tackles for loss, two interceptions, 225 yards in returns and another score.

Hankerson also plans to run track for the Bulldogs and won the 100 meters in Mississippi as a sophomore and again last year in Indiana. His father, Reggie, also ran track at MSU.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
