Mississippi State junior Nathaniel Lowe continued his torrid start to 2016 with a three-hit performance Sunday in Gray’s 10-0 win against Maroon at Dudy Noble Field. The five-inning exhibition marked MSU’s third scrimmage of the preseason.
Lowe finished Sunday’s scrimmage 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a pair of doubles, ending the first weekend of scrimmages 5 for 7 (.714) with four RBIs, three doubles, two walks and a run scored. Junior outfielder Cody Brown also had a multi-hit day for Gray, going 2 for 3 with two runs, an RBI, a double and a walk.
The trio of right-handed pitcher Noah Hughes, sophomore right-hander Jacob Billingsley and sophomore righty Ryan Rigby combined on the three-hit shutout of Maroon. Hughes started on the bump and struck out four batters over three frames with a walk and two hits allowed. Billingsley and Rigby both threw shutout innings to close it out.
Gray’s 10 runs came on nine hits, five walks and two hit by pitches. The victors plated five runs in both the second and third innings.
For Maroon, only sophomore Brent Rooker (1 for 2, SB), freshman Jake Mangum (1 for 2, SB) and freshman Luke Alexander (1 for 2) had hits.
Opening Day at Dudy Noble Field for John Cohen and company is Friday, Feb. 19. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT against Florida Atlantic.
