Eight Mississippi State pitchers combined to strike out 18 batters as Gray edged out a narrow 2-0 victory against Maroon Wednesday night at Dudy Noble Field. The six-inning exhibition marked MSU’s fourth scrimmage of the preseason.

Starting pitchers Keegan James and Zac Houston were both dominant to begin the game. James struck out four in three innings of two-hit ball, while Houston used a 97 mph fastball to strike out four in just two innings. Freshman Ryan Cyr replaced James on the bump for Gray and tossed two shutout innings to record the win. Junior right-hander Paul Young notched the save in the sixth.

Deadlocked in a scoreless tie in the fifth, sophomore team captain Brent Rooker scored senior Mike Smith and junior Jack Kruger on a single to left to give Gray the lead.

Maroon tried to make a dramatic comeback in the sixth and final frame thanks to a leadoff triple by sophomore Ryan Gridley and back-to-back walks by juniors Cody Brown and Gavin Collins. With the bases loaded, Young induced an infield fly, struck out a batter and escaped with a groundout to second.

Opening Day at Dudy Noble Field for John Cohen and company is Friday, Feb. 19. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT against Florida Atlantic.
