Mississippi State freshman left-hander Ethan Small cruised through four innings of shutout relief to lead Maroon to a 2-0 victory against Gray Sunday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field. The eight-inning exhibition marked MSU’s seventh scrimmage of the preseason.

Junior right-hander Zac Houston started the game for Maroon with a scoreless inning before giving way to Small, who fanned four batters and allowed one hit and two walks.  Junior Reid Humphreys recorded the save after newcomers Jared Padgett and Blake Smith threw an inning apiece.

The two teams played scoreless baseball for three innings before Maroon jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Mike Smith singled to left with one out and advanced two bases on a throwing error to first by Gray’s pitcher on a pickoff attempt. Junior Luke Reynolds then drove Smith home on a single up the middle.

Smith scored again in the fifth on an RBI single by freshman Luke Alexander after doubling down the left field line.

Opening Day at Dudy Noble Field for John Cohen and company is Friday, Feb. 19. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT against Florida Atlantic.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
