When the No. 11 Mississippi State baseball team takes the field the next time, it will finally be against someone else.
The Diamond Dawgs wrapped up the preseason Tuesday with a six-inning intrasquad scrimmage, their 12th of the preseason. Maroon defeated Gray 7-3 at Dudy Noble Field thanks to a four-run sixth inning.
Redshirt sophomore Brent Rooker (2 for 2, run) and freshman Brant Blaylock (2 for 2, 3 runs, 1 RBI) both had multiple hits for the victors, while redshirt junior Jacob Robson (1 for 4) and sophomore Ryan Gridley (1 for 1, walk) had two RBIs each.
Tied at three, Maroon took control of the game in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded following two walks and an infield single, Blaylock was hit by a pitch to drive in a run. Robson then stretched out the lead with a two-RBI single to left center. Blaylock scored the final run of the game after a failed pickoff attempt.
Junior Luke Reynolds started the scoring in the opening frame with a two-run home run to right field.
Maroon wasted no time getting back in the game, plating two runs in the top of the second thanks to a two-RBI single by Gridley.
The two teams traded runs in the fifth with an RBI double by Maroon’s Luke Alexander (1 for 2) and an RBI from Gray’s Cody Brown.
The freshmen trio of Konnor Pilkington, Jake Mangum and Ryan Cyr did not give up an earned run in four innings of relief on the mound for Maroon.
Opening Day at Dudy Noble Field for John Cohen and company is Friday, Feb. 19. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT against Florida Atlantic.
