Video: Malik Newman

Mississippi State freshman guard Malik Newman talks about his struggles of late and what he hopes to accomplish the rest of the season.

On scoring since Missouri…

“Just the different defensives that I’ve been seeing. I’m just trying to find new ways to score right now.”

 On expectations for Vanderbilt…

“They are a very talented team that plays hard. They’re a team that’s going to come here and fight and not let up.”

On carrying practice atmosphere into games…

“We try to execute the game plan. Georgia threw us different things that we didn’t go over. Other than that we just have to go out and compete and do what the game plan is.”

 On how his knee feels…

“It still bothers me a little bit, but I can’t let that be an excuse.”

On dealing with a difficult season, record wise…

“It’s very different taking loss after loss. It’s hard because I know that I’m going out and giving all that I have. I know the team’s going out and giving all that they have. For us to keep coming up short, it’s tough.”

On finding motivation to play when losing…

“There’s still hope. There’s still light at the end of the tunnel. Once the SEC Tournament starts that’s when things will start to get serious for us. Right now we’re still trying to get a higher seed.”

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
