State preps for third straight ranked opponent

No. 14 Mississippi State will face its third straight ranked opponent Thursday as it hosts 16th-ranked Kentucky. Head coach Vic Schaefer and sophomore guard Morgan William discuss how they spent the open date preparing to stop the Wildcats’ nine-game winning streak in the series.

Vic Schaefer – Head Coach

Opening Statement:

“Great day to be a Bulldog. Great win by our guys last night. I’m really happy for coach [Ben] Howland and his staff. I know how hard they’ve worked. To come back being down 17 in the SEC is a tremendous accomplishment. Vanderbilt is an outstanding team so I’m really happy for him. We’re getting ready for another Top 20 opponent.  The piranhas keep coming in the fish bowl that we live in so we have to get ready for another great ball club. We gave our kids off Sunday and Monday and then worked out for about an hour and fifteen on Saturday. It’s a big week for tests. A lot of them are inundated with test this week, so it’s a challenging week as well. We came back yesterday and had a good workout. They came back and gave good effort. I’m looking forward to seeing them today and finishing up with our game plan for Kentucky.”

On Makayla Epps…

“She’s just relentless. She just keeps coming at you, fearless competitor and tough. She’s a confident kid. Their whole team is that way. Their post players are really unlike any other team we’ve seen all year. They’re good facing the basket and off the bounce.”

On girls playing relentless…

“I think our kids do that. I have a bunch of kids who play that way. A game like tomorrow night, we’ll have to play well to have a chance to win. Another knock down drag out is what I’m expecting. I’m expecting our kids to play well and hard.“

On Morgan William’s drive and determination…

“I’ve never had a player play through a broken leg.  Her shin had a stress fracture in it. She’s a lot better today then she was six weeks ago.  For her to play through it at her position and play the way she’s played is very admirable.”

Morgan William – Soph., G

On learning how to win big games…

“I think we are still learning. We still have to grow. Even if we win tomorrow, we will still be learning how to win big games.”
