Three-seed MSU excited about SEC Tournament

For the second year in a row, Mississippi State received a double bye in the SEC Tournament as the No. 3 seed. The 16th-ranked Bulldogs play on Friday against an unknown opponent in Jacksonville, Florida, the site of this year’s tournament. MSU has already had success in that building this season, defeating South Florida 68-58 there on Dec. 30.

Head coach Vic Schaefer speaks about this year’s tournament and trying to improve his 1-3 record at the event.

Opening statement…

“Well, it’s a great day to be a Bulldog. It’s an exciting time of the year. You get through the grind of an SEC season and we’re fortunate to be 11-5 again. Today we were certainly excited about the honors our young ladies received. You have Dominique (Dillingham) on the (SEC) All-Defensive Team. Teaira (McCowan) is on the SEC All-Freshman Team. Victoria (Vivians) is First Team All-SEC. Those kids would all tell you they couldn’t do it without their teammates. It’s very satisfying and gratifying time for us. We’re very excited about the opportunity to play Friday night. We don’t know who we’ll play, but to be able to reward our kids with a double bye is certainly a good thing. We know what it’s like to play on Friday. We’d like to experience Saturday and Sunday, too. That’s our goal this year.”

On Victoria Vivians being First Team All-SEC…

“I think it’s a progression from last year when she was (All-SEC) Second Team. I think people recognize and realize that for us to be successful, Victoria has to score for us. All of those people that are on the All-SEC Defensive Team, Victoria Vivians probably knows what flavor gum they’re chewing.”

On the team this season compared to last season…

“I think number one, we’re younger and less experienced. Sometimes that can be a good thing though. Our depth is very young so I’ve been very pleased with the progress of our young players.”

On going back to Jacksonville…

“That was the whole purpose of going there (earlier this season). We knew that was where the tournament was going to be. We’ve had a practice there, a walk through, and a game in there.”

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
