Mississippi State assistant coach Ernie Zeigler filled in for Ben Howland on this week’s SEC basketball teleconference while Howland was away attending the Howell Trophy presentation in Jackson.

Here is a transcript of Zeigler’s time on the call…

Opening statement:

“We’re really excited to start this third portion of the season, starting the postseason. Coach Howland is really excited about our guys and the basketball that we’ve been playing particularly here over the last four to five weeks. We’re just gearing up to go be a part of an exciting tournament in Nashville.”

Who are some of the defensive players that stood out to you in the league during the year?

Zeigler: “There’s a few. I thought Michael Carrera with his intensity and the way he plays at both ends of the floor probably stood out more so than anyone. (Retin) Obasohan is a really big-time defender as well from Alabama.”

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
