The Magnolia State was well represented in the College Home Run Derby as Brent Rooker of Mississippi State and Colby Bortles of Ole Miss were among the eight participants at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska.

Rooker belted 27 home runs for 29 points in two rounds and finished fourth overall. The redshirt sophomore went deep on his first six swings was second after the opening round with 15 homers for 16 points.

Bortles failed to advance past the first round but finished tied for sixth overall with 10 home runs.

Hagen Owenby of East Tennessee State won the event leading all three rounds with 46 homers and edged out Houston’s Joe Davis in the finals, 13-12.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
