Representing his native country of Canada, Brandon McBride competed on his sport’s biggest stage and faced the best competition the world had to offer. His journey ends just shy of the medal round.

McBride’s time at the 2016 Rio Olympics concluded Saturday night with a sixth place finish in the semifinal round of the men’s 800m run. With a time of 1:45.41, he will not move on to Monday’s final.

A three-time national champion in the men’s 800m, McBride claimed two during his time with Mississippi State. He added a Canadian title a few weeks before heading to Rio.

He qualified for the semifinal round after winning his prelim in dominating fashion Friday morning, blowing past the competition with a time of 1:45.99. His former teammate Marta Freitas joined him in the 2016 Olympics, finishing in the preliminary round of the women’s 1500m race.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
