Ben Howland brought Mississippi State a top 10 recruiting class last year and made a major splash with his first commitment for 2017.

Four-star point guard Nick Weatherspoon pledged to the Bulldogs on Sunday after taking an official visit to Starkville. Weatherspoon is the top-rated prospect in Mississippi and the nation’s No. 5 point guard.

The 6-foot-2, 173-pounder also had offers from N.C. State, North Carolina, Alabama, Florida State, Georgetown, Indiana, Iowa State, Kansas, Louisville, LSU, Memphis, Miami and Ohio State.

Weatherspoon averaged 22.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game for Velma Jackson as a junior and is the younger brother of MSU sophomore guard Quinndary Weatherspoon.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
