High percentage Rebels

Ole Miss quarterbacks completed 80.6 percent of their passes against Central Arkansas, hitting 25 of 31 attempts. Most attempts were of the short, high-percentage variety. It’s not something Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze will apologize for. It’s “who we are,” he says. High percentage Rebels

Lost in the excitement of the Rebels’ success on offense was the fact that UCA quarterback Wynrick Smothers completed 25-of-32 attempts (78 percent). That’s obviously a figure that needs to improve.

Offensively, the Rebels should get a lift this week with the anticipated return of running back Jeff Scott, who was held out last week with lingering back pain. More here in the notebook. USA Today put Scott on its preseason All-SEC first team. He is also a member of the Paul Hornung Award Watch List. The Hornung Award goes to the nation’s most versatile player.

Scott is also a special teams threat. Last week freshman Jaylen Walton returned kicks, averaging 24.5 yards on two attempts. Junior Korvic Neat returned punts, averaging 6.7 yards on three attempts with a long return of 18 yards.
