Report: Markuson out as Wisconsin OL coach

An in-depth read here from Jeff Potrykus on Wisconsin’s offensive line woes that cost Mike Markuson his job Sunday, according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, for whom Potrykus covers the Badgers.

For a team noted for physical play with a Heisman Trophy candidate in the backfield, Wisconsin has struggled to run the football in its first two games, a comeback win against Northern Iowa and a 10-7 loss at Oregon State.

Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema expressed concern about offensive line play after Saturday’s game.

Bielema praised Markuson’s background upon his hiring, but Potrykus reports that several Wisconsin linemen spoke of a spring-time transition that wasn’t very smooth.

Markuson coach OL at Ole Miss for the last four seasons under Houston Nutt and had coached with Nutt since 1993 when they were together at Murray State.

  • Parrish, Do you have any comments on the kind of job Markuson did the past couple of years? Obviously, he had to have been doing something right at Arkansas back in the Darren McFadden days — they consistently put up some impressive numbers on the ground. And I remember reading positive things Michael Oher said about him. What happened?

I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but a big part of the way I judge an OL is the run game. Obviously Bret Bielema does the same thing. That being said, Ole Miss’ rushing numbers were not bad in Markuson’s tenure. The OL was bad last year. There were different theories there, one of them being David Lee’s system. You shouldn’t hear offensive coaches saying “simplify, simplify” in the third week of the season. We’re getting ready for Hugh to come out and talk now. I want to look back at those numbers more later.
