Tuesday Morning Update

Spanning the globe, or at least the SEC portion of it, on a Tuesday morning. …

The site for the new Champions Bowl, pairing representatives from the Big 12 and the SEC, is expected to be announced in October. Dallas, Houston and Atlanta are the favorites to host the bowl, and TV revenue is expected to generate more than $80 million. …

Alabama reached No. 1 in the rankings because — for among many reasons — it has quality depth. That depth will be put to the test now with the loss of junior running back Jalston Fowler, who injured a knee against Western Kentucky and is done for the season. Alabama travels to Arkansas this week, the first SEC game for both teams. Arkansas is coming off an upset loss to … well, you know who. La.-Monroe, by the way, is the national football team of the week as chosen by the Football Writers Association of America.

Arkansas interim coach John L. Smith – perhaps more interim that once believed after losing to ULM – has drawn criticism for running straight to the locker room and not shaking hands after the loss. The Warhawks take on another SEC foe this week, and Auburn appears more vulnerable going into the game than Arkansas, which was ranked No. 8. I figure Auburn wins the game not because I was impressed with the Tigers’ play against Mississippi State, but because I can’t imagine another lightning bolt of excitement coming from a program that has lacked so much of it since moving up from I-AA. On the other hand, I’ve heard an opinion from some Auburn fans who wouldn’t mind seeing a ULM win, their theory being that it could serve as the impetus for change.

  • They won a national championship just year before last and they are begging for change???? Paul Finebaum took Pat Dye to task yesterday over here in Birmingham, saying Pat Dye hired Gene and now what???? It was pretty hilarious. It’s just amazing to me that there is little to no patience these days. C’mon, you should at least get 2 seasons of miserable football. Especially after buying a national championship, right?
