Friday Chat

A friend tells me he intends to call or write SEC commissioner Mike Slive and express his views on the suspension of Ole Miss freshman DB Trae Elston.

Elston was suspended for the Texas game by the league earlier this week.

How much will the Rebels’ feel the loss of Elston tomorrow night against Texas? Obviously, Elston’s role was growing. Would coaches have been more careful with his number of plays against the No. 14-ranked Longhorns? Possibly.

There seems to be a consistent view for this game that an improved Ole Miss team will not get blown out but will not necessarily be close. I picked Texas by two touchdowns, and I’ve seen similar scores floated around the Internet.

I’ve also pointed out that this is a Texas team not without a few issues of its own. This is a team trying to rebound from a drop-off after it’s BCS championship game appearance against Alabama in 2009.

What might an upset win for Ole Miss mean at this stage of the Hugh Freeze rebuilding process?

Another big question for this game is how many people will be in Oxford/The Grove? Some have guessed 100,000. We had Chip Brown of on the radio earlier this week. He estimated 10,000 Texas folks to travel for the game.

It’s Errand Friday, so I’ll be out and about, but I’ll be checking the blog. Talking all things Ole Miss here. Leave your comments below.

  • I think our defense is going to give up a lot of points through the air. The only way we stand a chance is for our Offense to be just as effective and win the turnover battle.

Any word on the bomb threat in Austin @ UT this morning? Any players affected? I assume they are already in Oxford.

    • Hey Ghost, here is the latest from The Associated Press …

AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas has issued an alert on its website ordering an evacuation “due to threats on campus.”

alert posted shortly before 10 a.m. Friday says people on campus should
immediately evacuate all buildings and “get as far away as possible.”

of Texas director of communications Rhonda Weldon says the university
received a call about 8:35 a.m. from a man with a Middle Eastern accent
claiming to be with al-Qaida. The man said he had placed bombs all over
the campus that would go off in 90 minutes.

Wheldon says all the buildings were evacuated at 9:50 a.m. as a precaution.

She says no bombs have been found.

My biggest frustration with the Trae things is our AD is just like Pete Boone, he just rolls over. If that had been Al, LSU, or Auburn, they would have given them hell all over the airways. People would have marched in the streets and burned cars, and lawyers would have been involved. As long as we roll over and take it, they will continue to give it. Same goes for Sec refs. We all know State and Ole Miss have had more than a fair share of bad calls against sec darlings.

I don’t know if i agree. This issue can not be appealed, so the suspension stands no matter how much we push back or complain. I think it’s best we take a wait and see approach as to how this issue is handled going forward.

Is it wrong to suspend our player when there were obviously more flagrant fouls elsewhere? Yes, but that doesn’t mean we make a horses butt out of ourselves by complaining and bringing unnecessary attention to us. Sometimes, cooler minds prevail! Also, we don’t know what was done privately by Bjork that we weren’t privy to the information.

Hey guys, I just got home. I was having lunch with Gregg Ellis, our former MSU writer who now works at MSU, when I heard about the Texas bomb threat. Thanks, Todd, for catching us up there.

Ghost, I don’t know that the Ross Bjork response changes in a year, 5 years or 10, but I know that the school isn’t about to bite the hand of a conference from which it receives about $20 million a year.

I don’t think it’s right, and I think the SEC messed up here, especially when you play the Vandy hit against South Carolina and the Elston hit side by side. But the Vandy hit was “pre-Tulane injury” and the Elston hit was after the fact. I suspect that had something to do with it, but it’s an unequal application of the rule.

Brian, turnover margin will be a key. Ole Miss has improved in a lot areas. Can’t really say that for turnover margin yet.
