Freeze from SEC teleconference

Highlights from Hugh Freeze’s time on the SEC teleconference …

Opening comments

We’re excited about being back at home. Obviously we weren’t totally pleased with the way we performed at Georgia. They have a fine football team and found a way to pick us a part in the second half.

We have to get some kids back healthy and hopefully they’ll be ready to go against a fine Vanderbilt team with so much on the line for both of us.

On Georgia defense
They were able to take us out of our run game totally. It became difficult to be balanced. Against rushers like they have, that’s a bad predicament to be in. They’re inside guys really dominated the game against us. The way the first half ended, we lost a little of our confidence and were not able to regain the confidcnee. In the first three drives I thought we were excellent. We’ve evaluted the plan. We could have done some better things as coaches. And I don’t think we played our best game up front.

I think they will have more kids drafted off that defense than any we’ve faced. I think their size and speed is pretty special.

On depth concerns
We went to Georgia with 61 scholarship players and had some get banged up in that game. We’re very thin. We’re playing some kids out of position on the defensive side especially. We’re not going to use that as an excuse. We have to get prepared to play with who can give us the best chance to win. No doubt the effects are there.

On Jordan Matthews, Vandy wide receiver
You better know where he is. He’s a difficult matchup for everyone. He’s not only a talented kid, but the things they do with (Zac) Stacy and the ability of (Jordan) Rodgers to throw the football, they go hand-in-hand. They do such a good job of moving him around that he’s able to win some 1-on-1s. That is a challenge this week that we have to have a plan for.

On calling James Franklin
I think it’s possible to be very competitive and still be courteous. If I have a relationship with visiting coaches who are coming to our place it’s not uncommon for me to do that. I did it before this year with Clint Conque, Mack Brown, Gene Chizik. James Franklin was very kind to call me earlier in the year when we had an incident with Bo Wallace’s sister.
