Wommack talks Vanderbilt offense

Ole Miss defensive coordinator Dave Wommack says the multiplicity of Vanderbilt’s offense makes it difficult to prepare for the Commodores.

Preparation has been a problem for Ole Miss this week for other reasons as a number of players have missed practice time with injury.

“They do a great job of putting a lot of different formations in.  They’ll move an offensive lineman over and put a tight end in his spot. You have got to be able to prepare for that and it forces you to narrow down your defense a little bit,” Wommack said.

Defensive backs Aaron Garbutt and Wesley Pendleton are still out, but Senquez Golson is back after sustaining a concussion against Arkansas and is expected to start Saturday.

“It’s been hard. Being able to put a full unit out there really hurts in practice. It affects you with the personnel you like to run against them. There is no question that we need to get some guys back.”

Wommack also said that Vanderbilt running back Zac Stacy, who ripped off two big runs and rushed for 178 yards on 11 carries against Ole Miss last year, presents a challenge. Stacy became Vanderbilt’s career rushing leader earlier this season and is presently the fifth-ranked rusher in the SEC with almost 84 yards a game.

“We’ll I think what makes him so good is first of all he is tough. He’s a physical, tough runner. I don’t think he’s a burner, but he does have some deceptive type speed. He sets up his gaps so well. In their Wildcat he is the number one guy. They just catch teams sleeping sometimes, and they hit big plays through the gaps like that too. He’s impressive and a good SEC back no doubt.”
