Junior guard Diara Moore led all scores with 25 points, and Kenyotta Jenkins added 13.
Former Tupelo standout Maggie McFerring had eight points and three assists in 21 minutes off the bench.
The Rebels trailed by as many as six in the first half before tying the game at 42 with two McFerrin free throws. Ole Miss won in spite of the fact that Valencia McFarland scored just four points.
On a side note, some video of the Zooperstars, who performed at halftime. The video won’t do them justice. I had seen these guys before at Redbirds game, and they’re good.
It’s a sparse crowd here for tip-off of the women’s game against Southeastern Louisiana. The men’s game will follow. It’s the season opener for both.
Ole Miss has announced that it has imposed a one-year postseason ban its women’s program in response to “academic and recruiting misconduct” issues that resulted in the firing of former head coach Adrian Wiggins — who was not implicated — but the two assistants fired were.
The news release states: “The ban includes the Southeastern Conference Tournament and any and all postseason competition and will be a part of other yet to be determined self-imposed penalties. With the investigation ongoing, the details of the additional penalties will be announced at the appropriate time.”
Senior athletic department staff members have moved through the crowd here encouraging those in attendance to purchase women’s basketball season tickets. Cost is $65.
