Tuesday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Tuesday morning …

From Fayetteville, as Arkansas prepares to visit Mississippi State this weekend, interim Razorbacks coach John L. Smith is “optimistic” that his team can pull off a win against the Bulldogs, and he hasn’t ruled out the possibility that he’ll return as the Arkansas coach.

From Starkville, MSU has dropped three straight after a 7-0 start but is favored to end that streak against Arkansas. Ole Miss is not favored to win at No. 8 LSU. If the odds are right, the Rebels will be putting all their bowl-eligibility eggs in the Egg Bowl basket as they would try to reach their sixth win in the final regular season game against the in-state rival. While they will provide more motivation for the Rebels, MSU coach Dan Mullen says it means nothing to him. …

From Tuscaloosa, Alabama coach Nick Saban told media attending his presser that they, everyone who is not a football coach I presume, live in a “results” world and that football coaches and teams live in a “process” world. It was an illustration to say that while the Crimson Tide has gone 1-1 in its last two games, in neither game did it play well, according to Saban.

I found it interesting that Hugh Freeze used the results and process theme on the same day. Maybe that was so interesting, because I had just read Saban’s comments minutes before through the magic and wonder of Twitter. Freeze, though, didn’t seem to talk down to his attendees, because he didn’t use the phrase “you all.”

Here’s Freeze on the results vs. process theme: “One of the things I know that is definitely true to our staff is we can’t afford to be in the results-oriented business. It has to be about the process and the state of our program when we got here. There’s too much at stake in the lives of these young men that depend upon us to prepare them each week for manhood and for football games. We continue to strive to set the core principals and foundations for which our program will be built on. Nothing will change this week as we prepare for a very difficult game against LSU.”

Anything involving a coaching change at Tennessee or Auburn remains speculation at this point … at least officially. There has been no announcement about the future of Derek Dooely with the Vols or Gene Chizik with Auburn. If Auburn fires Chizik it will have to dig deep to pay off Chizik and his staff.

From Lexington, Kentucky players have good things to say about Joker Phillips as his tenure with the Wildcats winds down. …
