Ole Miss offensive coordinator Dan Werner breaks down the LSU defense …
Q: On LSU’s defense
“You know they are a typical SEC defense. I feel like I say it every week now, but it’s true. Big, strong, fast physical and a tough crew. You look at their front four and I can’t remember the last time I saw that much speed coming off the edge on a team. It’s not just their first team guys too it’s their second team guys too.”
Q: Is that the biggest concern?
“Definitely, but everybody has speed. Their whole team has speed so that is the biggest concern is how big and fast their whole team is, but on third downs they get those speed guys out wide and they’ll hurt you that way.”
Q: What about the speed and size in the secondary?
“You better be accurate throwing the ball. Sometimes you can get away with throwing the ball behind them a little bit, but with this bunch you can’t. They are going to intercept it. Their is a smaller window to throw it into.”
Q: How has the team responded this week?
“They’ve done great. That all stems from your head coach. If they can see that he’s still talking about it and worrying about it then it’s going to linger. Coach Freeze has done job of moving on and making us and them move on. We’ve had two great practices this week.”
Q: On Randall Mackey
“We actually kicked ourselves after last game because we didn’t play him enough. Jeff has done so well that we just didn’t call our personnel where it’s him and Jeff together, but he’ll definitely be in there this week.”
Q: On the TE situation now
“We’re definitely going to have to go with some 3 wides this week and some four wides. You know we are only down to two TEs now with HR and Jamal, but we’ll those guys have responded well this week and we’ll go with them forward.”
