Update 6:25 p.m.
A few words here from the Ole Miss players, who were put back on limits earlier this afternoon. Take note of Wallace’s right shoulder, his throwing shoulder, wrapped after treatment.
An interesting Monday presser for Mississippi State week, made shorter by the absence of players. They typically trickle in after Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze speaks.
Today we were told they were off limits for the week. That has since changed, and some selected players will be made available. We’ll have interviews this week. I don’t know what that will look like, we’ll just have to see.
The fact that Freeze was ready to shut down the whole thing is an example of what this week means to him. He said shutting out the players was about avoiding distractions, avoiding the possibility that one or more might say the wrong thing or say something that would be taken the wrong way.
Whatever it was about, the way it looks is that Freeze is pulling out the stops to break a three-game Ole Miss skid in the series.
Some highlights from the presser:
– Freeze said he expects all players who made the LSU trip to be available this week. That includes CB Charles Sawyer (shoulder), tight end Jamal Mosley (knee) and QB Bo Wallace (shoulder).
The Wallace shoulder injury has become harder to play with over time. It’s goes back to the hit he took when he originally injured the shoulder against Tulane. “And it maybe another hit he’s taken on it since then,” Freeze said.
Mosley’s presence at tight end is particularly important given the fact that senior Ferbia Allen injured his knee against Vanderbilt and is no longer available.
– While there has been a countdown clock to this game in the past at MSU — I don’t know if it’s still there — Freeze says he didn’t mention Mississippi State to his players until after Saturday’s LSU game. Says he will mention it many times this week, but was light on specifics when asked how he would emphasize the game to his players.
“The only goal we talked about this year was to put a product on the field for this great university that would play with great pride and passion. I think our kids have done that.”
– Freeze commented on the 89-yard punt return touchdown by LSU’s Odell Beckham. Said it was just a great athletic player, that Ole Miss had three different players in position to make the stop and did not. Made a reference to his team’s depth and trying to rest some players on that unit, but punt coverage personnel will be reviewed this week.
