Wednesday Practice Notes

By Hayden Sowers

Ole Miss’ preparation for the annual Egg Bowl continued Wednesday with a closed practice that Rebels coach Hugh Freeze said was “much better” than yesterday. Freeze expressed disappointment when reviewing Tuesday’s practice with media.

  • A flu like bug had seemed to hit the team yesterday, but Freeze said nobody missed practice today because of it and he called it “more of a 24 hour virus”.
  • Freeze sounded hopeful when asked about the status of starting CB Charles Sawyer saying, “Charles went through all of practice. There is nothing wrong with his legs it’s just a matter of how he will handle contact.” Freeze added they probably won’t know until game time how Charles can handle that contact.
  • Freeze was also asked what he will remember about this senior class, “The foundation and those guys were one of the first groups I met with when I came here.  I shared with them our core values and that I needed them to be 100 percent buy-in in order for the younger guys to do so. Those guys will always be special because they are the first senior class we coached here at Ole Miss.”
  • Mississippi State’s secondary is pegged as the strength of their team, and WR Coach Grant Heard was asked about that battle on Saturday, “I think it’s going to be a good matchup just like every week in the SEC. We look forward to the challenge and we just have to make more plays than they do.”
  • The leader of that secondary is Johnthan Banks and Heard was asked about what star WR Donte Moncrief has to do to win that matchup, “Just be his self and be physical.  Main thing is just go make plays like we’ve been doing all year.”
