Getting Millinghaus back

There was news at the basketball presser today, and that is that freshman guard Derrick Millinghaus will be available for the Rebels Saturday game at Middle Tennessee.

Here’s some video of point guard Jarvus Summers, as he talks about where the Rebels are as they prepare for their first road game:

More on Millinghaus. His return is indeed good news. The Rebels were able to survive in his absence, and it’s over-stating things to say Millinghaus is a “must have” component to the team right now.

But he brings a world of possibilities and excitement in the way he pushes the tempo at point guard.

Millinghaus appeared in three games, starting one. The last one, against Arkansas-Little Rock, he sustained a slight tear to his meniscus. That required minor surgery and kept him out of action for a bit, not as long as was previously thought it would.

Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy said he was relieved to see that right after the surgery there wasn’t as much swelling as there could have been, a sign that a quick return was possible.

Millinghaus is only shooting 25 percent for the year with nine assists, seven turnovers and eight steals. It’s the stat line in his last appearance that is most impressive.

Millinghaus, a native of Schenectady, N.Y., was 5-for-11 from the floor, 9-for-11 from the free throw line, to finish with 19 points in 25 minutes off the bench against UALR. He had four turnovers but also five assists.

His tempo provides a nice contrast to that of the more deliberate Summers and allows Kennedy to throw a change-up when the opposing team begins to settle in defensively.
