Tuesday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Tuesday morning …

If you haven’t had much cause to consider Western Kentucky football that changed Monday. The former school of Ole Miss AD Ross Bjork make college football waves by serving as the landing spot for the controversial Bobby Petrino, who was fired from Arkansas after his affair with an athletics department employee came to light in a summer-time motorcycle crash.

Here’s what some are saying about Western’s decision to hire Petrino.

Not everyone thought Petrino’s hiring was a bad move. Some considered it a worthwhile risk with minimal financial cost and the potential for big rewards on the field. Here’s CBSSports.com’s Dennis Dodd and Birmingham’s Kevin Scarbinsky. …

The Petrino hire overshadowed the fact that the embattled Southern Miss program has a new coach in Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken. He is expected to be introduced today. Monken becomes the third OSU OC to be named coach at USM (How bout all those acronyms?) following Jeff Bower and Larry Fedora.

Southern’s hire of Monken threw a wrench in the plans of Louisiana Tech, which is working to replace Sonny Dykes. Southern and Tech will be rivals in the new-look Conference USA beginning next season. …

Continuing the day that was with coaching news, former Ole Miss assistant Mike MacIntyre was named coach at Colorado after quite an impressive turnaround at San Jose State. In three seasons there MacIntyre went 1-11, 5-7 and 10-2. He was twice an assistant with David Cutcliffe, first at Ole Miss and later at Duke, and a really nice guy.

Former Ole Miss safety Charles Clark, who played for MacIntrye, was on his San Jose staff and is expected to follow him to Colorado. …

  • I don’t think this is the place to talk about Miss State sports, but what has happened to that basketball team? They normally a power house but this season seem to fall. I have always had a warm sport in my heart for them in Baseball and basketball, much better programs than Ole MIss as it seem to me.
