Spanning the globe on a Wednesday morning …

You often hear players and coaches describe a bowl game as a reward for a good season. There’s a reason for that, and here it is, as The Sports Business Daily breaks down the process of gift-giving from bowls to players and what most bowls, including the BBVA Compass Bowl for Ole Miss and Pittsburgh, are providing this season. In addition to gifts provided by the bowls, players are allowed a certain amount of travel money depending on the distance to the bowl city. They’re allowed to keep the travel money not used if they can get to the game by less expensive means … like car-pooling. …

This isn’t new, but I came across this LSU opinion while trolling this morning, and I think it speaks to — without giving the credit — the job Hugh Freeze did in resurrecting the Rebels’ offense. Remember what the Rebels got done offensively against LSU in 2011. What a difference a year made.

Change wasn’t evident only on offense. Defensively, the Rebels got better as the season went along. Dave Wommack did a good job of getting play out of young safeties where where inexperience remains an issue, and Chris Kiffin had the defensive line really playing well by season’s end.

There have been rumblings about Nick Saban and the NFL lately. Might the lure of a challenge take him away from the program he’s built in Tuscaloosa? This from Birmingham columnist Kevin Scarbinsky …

More on Bobby Petrino’s hiring at Western Kentucky. The New York Times says Petrino’s record trumps his past. It will be interesting to see what kind of staff he assembles at Western. …
