I have been on Christmas vacation since last Thursday and have been away from a keyboard most of that time. It’s been nice to catch up with family in Louisiana, the Baton Rouge area, and in Meridian, from where this report originates, but I’m back breaking bricks today.
I hope all of you had an equally Merry Christmas. I know many in the South had to deal with the threat of severe weather yesterday.
There was some Christmas Day college football news as new Auburn coach Gus Malzahn announced the hiring of Mississippi State defensive backs coach Melvin Smith.
It’s an impressive group of recruiters that Malzahn is putting together. Last week he announced the hiring of long-time Georgia assistant Rodney Garner. Smith, a native of Magee, has spent most of his 31-year career in Mississippi. He coached at Ole Miss from 1992-1994 under Billy Brewer and Brewer’s interim replacement, Joe Lee Dunn. …
Ole Miss basketball defeated Hawaii 81-66 to finish 2-1 in the Diamondhead Classic in Honolulu. A first-round loss to Indiana State kept the Rebels from getting games against the quality RPI opponents in the field.
Ole Miss football will enjoy its final day of Christmas break today. The Rebels gather for practice tomorrow at 7:45 back on campus. That practice is closed to media. The Rebels have five more Oxford practices. Tomorrow and Tuesday’s are closed. These practices will begin to focus more on Pittsburgh, the BBVA Compass Bowl opponent. Kickoff in Birmingham is noon on Jan. 5.
