Wednesday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Wednesday morning. …

This was posted to Youtube Tuesday by the CBS Sports Network, the cable sports channel that employs former Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt. Click and listen to current coach Hugh Freeze as he talks recruiting with Nutt:

It would be a little less awkward, I think, if Freeze were discussing Ole Miss football with Billy Brewer, because there’s more time between Brewer’s run as Ole Miss coach and Nutt’s, but this is the media day in which we live.

As football attention shifts to Pro days, the draft etc, here’s a list of players invited to the combine. ..

Ole Miss baseball is back in action at 4 p.m. today as the No. 8 (Baseball America) ranked Rebels take on Tennessee-Martin. Martin is 0-4 after losing yesterday to Southern Illinois 8-4. The Skyhawks were swept on opening weekend at Southeastern Louisiana. Two of their four losses have been closes, two not co close.

Sophomore right-hander Sam Smith will start for Ole Miss today. He had a 5.03 ERA last season when he made nine mid-week starts.

It will be another cold day of baseball today with temps not expected to get past the mid-40s, and regardless of what weather is like elsewhere on campus, the wind finds Swayze Field.

Playing conditions may not be opportune, but it will be interesting to watch the Ole Miss offense. This bunch needs to push across more runs than it did last year, and runs were not that many — understandably — against a solid TCU pitching staff as the Rebels opened with a sweep.

I will be at the game and will update the blog with results this evening.

Speaking of college baseball, there are not great expectations for Alabama this season, but the Crimson Tide has gotten off to a good start which on Tuesday included a 10-8 win against a ranked Southern Miss team. Ole Miss will play Alabama in Oxford this season and will face Southern Miss as a non-conference foe. …

On the court, Ole Miss is at South Carolina tonight where the Gamecocks are trying to win an SEC game for the third time. They have a big win over Arkansas in Columbia this season but are only 2-10 in SEC play. …

Reference to Southern Miss loss at Alabama in yesterday’s game, from what i hear Southern made a come back in the top of the ninth inning but fell short of a tie by one run. Southern MIss swept Missouri over the weekend. so I fell they have a worthy team. Over the years Southern a thorn in the side of the Tide in football. They could handle Alabama when MIss State and Ole MIss could not. JB
