A little more than an hour from first pitch at Swayze Field. Rhode Island is taking batting practice. What you can’t hear in this picture are the sound effects of the early-arriving students in right-center.

Rhode Island — which refers to itself as Rhody — is off to an 0-3 start on its tour of southern baseball. The Rams lost three at Florida State last weekend. The first two were neither blowouts nor exceptionally close, and Rhody took the Noles to extras in Game 3 before losing 8-6.

The Rams play at Mississippi State Tuesday and Wednesday then leave the Deep South but remain below the Mason Dixon line for games at East Tennessee State, Wake Forest, NC Greensboro and Winthrop, the latter a three-game series, before playing their first home game on March 19 against Sacred Heart.

Rhode Island was 33-25-1 last year, 16-8 in the A-10 and is projected second in the A-10 this year.

Under Jim Foster Rhode Island has posted five-straight 30-win seasons for the first time. The 2009 team set a school record with 37 wins including victories over ranked opponents No. 8 Miami, No. 11 Oklahoma State and No. 25 Ohio State.

The Rams beat no one ranked in the top 25 last year.

Rhody’s best player is junior outfielder Jeff Roy, a preseason All-American and the reigning Atlantic 10 player of the the year. Roy finished his sophomore season ranked first or second in the team and among the conference leaders in most offensive categories. He hit .421 against the A-10 last year and reached base in 41 consecutive games. He had a hit in each game last weekend and was credited with a steal of home on the back end of a double steal. He’s hitting .286 in the three games.
