Henderson wins Howell Trophy

Marshall Henderson has won the Howell Trophy which goes to the state’s top college basketball player.

Teammate Murphy Holloway and Southern Miss guard Dwayne Davis were also finalists.

I voted for Henderson, because he’s been the Rebels’ most consistent player throughout the season. Flirting all year with a 20 points per game average, Henderson is at 19.7 points a game going into the SEC tournament.

The Gillom Trophy, named for former Ole Miss star Peggie Gillom-Granderson, went to Mississippi State’s Martha Alwal, who led the SEC in blocked shots.

Ole Miss junior guard Valencia McFarland was among the finalists.

I have been to almost all if the home games and understand basketball. The problem is that it seems our players do not. There also is little development if our plays from year to year. What offensive move does Buckner have? Why can’t MH go to his right? Why would our senior leader ever take a three point shot when he can barely hit the rim on a free throw? Why leave your best shooter in the game to foul out against Texas A&M? Why go inside against Kentucky and have 12 shots blocked when we were making our outside shots? Why stay in a zone when vandy was breaking 3 point records against us? Why, at the end of the first A&M game, have MH try to guard a bigger and stronger Elston Turner when he was red hot and all they needed was a two pointer? We had the talent to win 4 more games this year. That talent was recruited by Kennedy and he needs to be given credit for that. Unfortunately, either he can not coach them up, or they are uncoachable. He must also take the credit for that.
