Wednesday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Wednesday morning …

Ole Miss is back on the practice field in about an hour. I’ll have updates on the blog later.

Nick Saban brought back some advice from Yankees closer Mariano Rivera on his recent spring training trip.

The bigger news more recently has been the comments of new Arkansas coach Bret Bielema — hired from Wisconsin — about Saban and Alabama. Get ready for “news” like this as we enter the football season between spring drills and August camp. This will die down and resurface at Media Days in Hoover the third week of July. …

Do you have fond memories of the BBVA Compass Bowl? Apparently the BBVA people do not, at least not fond enough to renew the contract which will expire after the 2014 game. The company will not jump back on board.

Ole Miss created great Compass Bowl memories with its play on the field, but little else about the game day experience was exceptional. ¬†Two things will improve the experience at the bowl: an ownership group not named ESPN and if the SEC decides to hold the bowl to a certain standard for its relationship as a conference partner. …

Former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer is back in college football though not as a head coach. He will serve in an advisory capacity as East Tennessee State revives its program. …

I always thought Fulmer was a good coach, he lured Peyton Manning away from Ole Miss, and Brewer but he an Peyton could not do what Cutcliff and Eli did, They beat the Gators twice and UT no win. JB

  • Dadgum!! Way to chase off a sponsor Ole Mi$$. I kind of liked the BBVA Compost Bowl. I thought it was a great home for Ole Mi$$. The trail has gone cool, leads have faded into the shadows.

My guess is of the 59,135 in attendance at the last BBVA Compass Bowl 85% were Ole MIss fans Pitt fans did not show support. It was really low key bowl anyway. I think now days there are too many of those of none importance bowls being played. not as years back when it was Rose, Cotton, Sugar and orange bowls the number one attraction, but now all those other small bowls had to exercise their political correctness and forge their way into the picture and spoil the intent.
