Monday Football Notebook

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze reviewed video from Saturday’s scrimmage and felt pretty much the same way he did leaving the field. It was a better day for the offense, a bounce-back day from the Friday workout. He didn’t think there was lazy play from the defense just better play from the offense.

The defense might not have been quite as fundamentally sound as it was last Friday, Freeze said.

The big news from the morning was that Channing Ward was unveiled to the media for the first time since arriving last August. Here’s what he said:

Some thoughts from today:

Basketball player Martavious Newby participated in one spring practice last week but has not been back. He is likely no longer with the football team.

“I’m embarrassed to tell you, but I’ve got to find out. I don’t think so,” Freeze said. “That one has gotten by me. I’m normally on the player personnel issues.”

Freshman running back Mark Dodson was impressive in the scrimmage, and the early enrollee continues to build on a solid spring.

It won’t be surprising if Dodson climbs to No. 2 on the depth chart.

“He finds holes. He gets north and south quickly. He’s very shifty, and at the same time he has size and power. He’s a real good back,” defensive back Mike Hilton said.

Dodson showed the power on one carry when he ran over Nick Brassell, causing Brassell to get up slowly. As he walked off the field he seemed to be holding his back.

In other injury news early enrollee tight end Christian Morgan was scheduled to have an MRI on his knee today. Wide receiver Vince Sanders turned an ankle, but it wasn’t believed to be serious.

Before the ankle, Sanders had a nice one-handed grab with Charles Sawyer in man coverage in pass scale. The pass was from Robert Ratliff and was over Sawyer’s shoulder. Nice throw.

Seeing a lot of Carlos Thompson at middle linebacker when the defense goes to a 4-3.

Sophomore walk-on Carlos Davis, a running back most of his career, was singled out by defensive coordinator Dave Wommack after Saturday’s scrimmage. He’s been moved to cornerback and had a big stick on Dodson during early tempo work. Davis made a name for himself on special teams last year.

  • My source tells me that former Notre Dame QB and former LSU commitment Gunner Kiel, is checking out The University of Ole Mi$$ School for Wayward QBs. Joining a cast of 1,000′ s like Jerry Masoli, Jevan Snead, .. and many others. (nothing but transfers since Elijah Dwayne Manning). It must be the lower standards offered for anyone who can throw a football.

Ignoring your unsuccessful attempt to be funny, Ole Miss has been mentioned among the schools that Kiel is interested in. Kiel also listed your “BuellDaggs.” It’s unclear where Ole Miss is among Kiel’s preferences. It’s also unclear whether Ole Miss is mutually interested in Kiel. We’ll just have to wait and see.
That’s a nice quote. Was that Tyler Russell?

  • Salve! Yes! That’s real Latin, not some hybrid thought up to print on a keychain and make a few bucks. The qoute was from the late great Jerry Garcia.

And “salve” to you to, sir. I recognize the phrase because I have also seen Rome on HBO.

I doubt the people who came up with the derivative that is the basis of my username were the least bit interested in selling keychains, but I appreciate your interest.

Didn’t Robert Hunter write the lyrics to a lot of Greatful Dead songs?

      • I am impressed with your knowledge of The Dead. Yes! Hunter did write alot of their songs, however “Truckin’ ” was a callaboration of Wier, Garcia, Hunter and Lesh, according to legend, although Hunter gets lyrical credit. Besides, when I qoute someone it’s because they have spoken/ sang the words. The NCAA is persuing interests of theirs.
