Grove Bowl

Some notes from the final practice of spring.

That’s what it was, a practice, and that’s OK. Spring football tends to get overdone. A spring game is a nice outing for fans, but the last thing any team needs is another injury, particularly with the injuries the Rebels have had this spring.

And they almost got away without another injury.

Freshman running back Mark Dodson has looked very good this spring but he may have sustained a concussion on a hit from transfer safety Anthony Alford.

There was no immediate word on Dodson’s status.

“The shot he took was to the helmet. He looked a little dazed,” Freeze said.

Here’s some Freeze video from after the scrimmage:

Overall three touchdowns were scored by the offense. Nick Parker had a 1-yard TD run, Jimmy Potepa a 10-yard TD run and Khalid Purnell a 40-yard pass to Cody Core.

Beyond Core, those aren’t names you’re likely to see during a game next season

One that you will see is Ja-Mes Logan. He took full advantage today of the absence of Donte Moncrief and Vince Sanders with five catches for 101 yards.

Serderius Bryant had a nice day too, 1.5 sacks, a pass break-up and a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Another guy who played well was Channing Ward. Earlier this week coaches were calling on Ward to play faster. They said he responded as the week went on. Defensive coordinator Dave Wommack said there was some sort of personal issue he felt was affecting Ward’s performance. After Ward talked with him in his office, Wommack evaluated Ward differently.

Anyway, Ward was credited with three tackles and a half sack today. He had a one-on-one stop of Maikhail Miller, which is not something a lot of people can say. Ward showed off his strength there.

Here’s the Wommack video with his comments on Ward and many more:

  • I predict a great year for the blackbears. Another bowl game definitely! This year gonna make it to Shreveport! Yes indeed!

“I can true you…see your true colors.”

Who gives a flying flip about your predictions. After the basketball team made a complete idiot out you, its amazing you post anything. Let’s see…making the NIT Tournament field, an early exit in the SEC Tournament and definitely a Wisconsin loss in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. But like an egg-sucking dog, you continue to hang around. But please, don’t let me stop you. We’re sorta getting a kick out of when your wayward thinking is proven wrong time after time after time.

state might pull of 6 wins and go to independence or liberty or may well stay at home this year, huge step backwards as Mullinstock continues going backwards as crooms work is now gone,so similar to O and Nutt it is scary

I have a question: How many, if any of that outstanding class of recruits participated in yesterdays Grove Bowl? I remember the day when OM freshmen and other SEC Schools field a team of just freshmen. and Also, when the varsity team player went both ways. Center and FB player OF switched to LBers on defense QB was a safety and punter, HB’s were defensive Backs. OM had a straight on FG kicker by the
named Paige Cothern who was an outstanding kicker and I believe he made it to the Pro’s. All this ancient history as I remember it. I guess back in the 1940 -50’s time. Hemingway open on both end of field score board NE end and portable bleachers on the SW end. Ticket cost $2.50 – 5.00 each. a coke in the stand $.50 that was outragious whe one really only cost a nickle in the stores. A bottle of hooch was jail time if caught. JB

    • JB, there were five mid-year signees who were eligible to participate in the spring game. Juco transfers Nick Brassell, Lavon Hooks and Quadarias Mireles played, as well as freshman Mark Dodson. Freshman Christian Morgan was held out with a knee injury but went through practice until he was hurt.

Cody Core DID NOT catch the 40 yard TD in the Grove Bowl. It was FR Jordan Gallegos #86. A name you WILL likely see in a game in the future.
