The win secures the SEC series for Ole Miss, the first for the Rebels since winning twice at Arkansas on opening weekend. They’d lost three straight since then.
Ole Miss goes for the sweep today. In the big picture a win would put the Rebels at 7-8 at the midway point of SEC play, which officially arrives after tomorrow’s game. A lot of teams have made a run from 7-8.
Here’s Mike Bianco:
The Rebels had only four hits today, but three of them produced runs, including two of them with two outs in the eighth innings, one from Will Allen, who is 4-for-8 with four RBIs on the weekend, the other from Austin Knight, who must lead the SEC in big late-game hits for a sub-.200 pinch-hitter. He had a game-winning pinch-hit against Rhode Island earlier this year.
Mike Mayers was really good for six innings but faded in the seventh. Tanner Bailey couldn’t hold a one-run lead in the seventh but pitched a scoreless eighth. When the Rebels scored three times in the bottom of the eight he became the winning pitcher — after Brett Huber had a fairly easy time in the ninth for his eighth save.
