Kentucky’s bullpen and the 18-inning game

Kentucky lost an 18-inning marathon 3-2 last night at Western Kentucky. They add a travel day on top of that and will play at Ole Miss Thursday night at 6:30.

Teams have bounced back from such, and the Wildcats have time to catch their second wind.

It is interesting to note how Kentucky’s bullpen was stretched last night, however. Right-hander Chandler Shepherd leads Kentucky’s relievers in SEC innings with 17. He pitched two last night giving up a hit and two walks but no runs.

Right-hander Trevor Gott has thrown 9.2 SEC innings with a 2.79 ERA. He went 3.1 innings last night, throwing 71 pitches. He gave up a run on four hits but struck out five and had no walks.

Right-hander Zach Strecker took the loss, giving up a run on a walk and four hits with five strikeouts in four innings. In SEC play he’s appeared just three times but hasn’t given up a run over 2.2 innings.

Western Kentucky seem to be a spoiler with the big boys, if memory serve me correctly I believe they put an end once to Ole Miss run to Omaha. And again at the time Om was something like a # 5 national seed to Omaha. That was the glory days of Stephen Head. I believe Ole MIss chance of getting to Omaha is about like the chance a crop duster airplane breaking the sound barrier. some like about 40 years since they have been there.
