Mathis says he’s in

Tanner Mathis updated his status regarding the Mississippi State series on Twitter yesterday, responding to a fan’s question with simply: “I’m playing.”

Earlier Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco had described Mathis’ status as “hopeful” as a lingering knee issue has been slow to heal. Mathis was on crutches earlier this week.

Two things about this update: One, it’s not surprising that a coach would take a cautious approach in discussing it. Two, it’s not surprising that a player who’s on-field personality is that of a scrappy hustler would pronounce himself fit and ready to play.

Also, making the lineup “to play” and playing effectively are not always the same thing.

It’s worth keeping an eye on. Mathis, the starting left fielders, has been hitting better of late. His on-base percentage is among the team leaders as he leads the team in walks and HBPs.

Game 1 against the Bulldogs is tonight at 6:30.
