Baseball Notebook

A few baseball notes from the afternoon.

Freshman right-hander Jacob Waguespack — not Josh Laxer — will start for Ole Miss tomorrow at Southern Miss. Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said he wanted to get a look at Waguespack, who has been getting stronger since missing the first half of the season with tendonitis.

Waguespack has a 1.42 ERA but has pitched only 6.1 innings over four appearances. A larger role was anticipated for him this season, but he didn’t make his collegiate debut until the Governor’s Cup game against Mississippi State.

Here’s Waguespack:

Waguespack grew up outside of Baton Rouge and had a scholarship offer from LSU.

In other news, junior right-hander Mike Mayers has been named SEC co-pitcher of the week following seven innings of shutout baseball against MSU.

His seven innings tied a season-high, and he held the Bulldogs to just two hits, just one runner past second base.

Mayers shares the award with Texas A&M’s Daniel Mengden, a sophomore right-hander, who held LSU to one run over eight innings as the Aggies won Game 1 of that series last week.

Also …

The rotation for the LSU series, which runs Thursday-Saturday, will be Mayers, Sam Smith and Bobby Wahl in Game 3.

And …

The Rebels moved back into the Baseball America Top 25 at No. 23, one spot ahead of MSU, which dropped three spots to No. 24.

Here’s the complete poll.

Ole Miss is in the SEC tournament as well as all the SEC West teams, looks as if Georgia is the only one out at this time. It appears that Vandy will be the No.1, seed in SEC tournament LSU Could be #2 but it all depends how they handle Ole Miss this weekend So Carolina # 3 and Arkansas # 4, again it all depends on this coming weekend final play, but as it looks now these four team will be seeded 1,2,3, and 4 and will draw a bye. after the first round(single elimination) of tournament play, four teams will go home leaving the other four teams along with the top four seeded teams to fight for another day in a double elimination fashion. The Rebels of Ole Miss has got a good chance to go to the next level of play after SEC tournament play, again it we be just how their bull pen performs. Bobby Wahl one game and that’s about it for him based on his performance this weekend against Miss State.
