Kendricks wins, Young advances

Ole Miss sophomore Sam Kendricks didn’t win the SEC pole vault championship, but he won the bigger one.

The former Oxford High School star jumped 18-8.25 earlier this evening to edge Jack Whitt of Oral Roberts, the defending pole vault champion, and finish first in the event at the NCAA championships at Eugene, Ore.

Kendricks has the nation’s top collegiate jump this season, clearing 19-0.75 at the Texas Relays on March 29.

He finished second at the SEC championships in mid-May with an 18-1 jump in Columbia, Mo.

Also this evening Isiah Young ran 10.00 to win his heat the in the 100 meters and advance to Friday’s final. Young’s time was the third-fastest of the day.
