Bianco: Wahl has not signed with A’s

Update 9:24

There was some buzz through the evening that the ship hadn’t quite sailed on this story, and Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco says the report is not true, that Wahl has not signed.

Where the talks stand and what happens from here remains to be seen, but at this moment Bianco says that Wahl has not signed.

This from Jim Callis of Baseball America:

If the report is correct Wahl’s go-or-stay decision was apparently impacted by surplus money thrown his way. His pick — fifth round, 161st pick over all — was slotted for $286,200.

At pick value, Wahl could have gained more than $1.3 million had he returned to school and played his way into the first round in 2014.

That’s a big gap in assigned values, but there’s also a lot of risk in coming back. A $500,000 bonus looks to be middle ground Wahl could live with and move on and not have to worry with the possible pit falls of a return and wondering what might happen if he did not duplicate 2013’s success.
