Christian Helsel departs from Ole Miss baseball

by John Luke McCord

It has been learned that Christian Helsel will not return to the Ole Miss baseball team next season, as first reported by’s Chase Parham.

This could be a hit to the depth the Rebels were planning to have for next season. Helsel showed the most promise of all the freshman position players last season. He played in 39 games, starting in 23 last season, mostly finding a home at second base. It was assumed that Helsel would have first crack at the vacant third base spot.

Helsel had been playing with St. Cloud, a team in the Northwoods summer amateur baseball league until he injured his elbow recently and it appears to be serious.

With incoming freshmen and the return of John Gatlin, the Rebels should have plenty of options to fill the vacant third base slot.

Preston Overby still a Rebel and I believe he started his career with Ole Miss as a third baseman.

PA I see that you are back from fishing – hope you caught a good mess

    • JB, Thanks a lot. We didn’t actually fish. Did a lot of floating and rafting. I hope to do a little fly fishing the next time around. Beautiful area over there.
