Here is Hugh Freeze’s statement on former South Panola star Nick Brassell, who, as expected, is did not meet academic requirements.
Freeze: “We are very disappointed that Nick is no longer a part of our program. While he showed much improvement, it was not enough to regain eligibility status. We wish him the best.”
This was emailed around 5, about the start of the cross country meeting.
I have been asked if Brassell would have the chance to continue working toward eligibility and compete at a later date. This looks like a parting of the ways.
Brassell’s exit is not a surprise. Freeze basically announced it at SEC Media Days when he painted an extremely dim picture of Brassell’s chances to meet academic requirements.
Had he made it there would have been a nice three-player rotation at corner. Without him corner is another position where the Rebels will be searching for quality depth behind starters Charles Sawyer and Senquez Golson.
In other news …
Among the 105 players signing in today were transfer DL Fadol Brown and three walk-ons.
Here’s Freeze’s quote from the release:
“Our coaches and players are excited to get to work,” Freeze said. “Paul Jackson and our strength staff did a phenomenal job this summer preparing us for the grind ahead, and we’re looking forward to focusing on football and growing as a team over the next month.”
Media Day tomorrow, practice begins Saturday.
