Monday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Monday morning …

From Tuscaloosa, sophomore WR Amari Cooper was big news in Alabama’s scrimmage on Saturday. …

From Auburn, defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson has been around the SEC, and he’s hoping to engineer a turnaround with the Tigers. …

From Columbia (the South Carolina one), Jadeveon Clowney missed the Gamecocks’ weekend scrimmage with a sore shoulder. South Carolina coaches downplayed the injury saying their star player wasn’t going to see many snaps anyway. Clowney will get some Heisman buzz if he has the year that’s expected of him. …

Speaking of the Heisman, the New York Post says Johnny Manziel’s off-field behavior will cost him a second hoisting of the trophy. And speaking of Manziel, CBS columnist Gregg Doyel says he’ll separate Manziel the football player and Manziel the person and will enjoy the former not the latter this season.

More off-field Aggies news. More than 1,000 people on Saturday attended the funeral for Polo Manukainiu, a redshirt freshman defensive lineman who was killed in a car wreck on July 29. …

In non-football news former Ole Miss track star Brittney Reese accomplished something Sunday that even Jackie Joyner-Kersee never did. Reese became the first American woman to win three straight long jump world championships with a leap of 7.01 meters at the worlds in Moscow. …
