Big-game test for Bryant

Ole Miss linebacker coach Tom Allen talks about the loss of Denzel Nkemdiche but also talks up Serderius Bryant here:

We heard from Bryant earlier in the week. He was part of Houston Nutt’s 2011 signing class, which Rivals ranked at No. 19. Texas was No. 3 that year.

Bryant, though, was SEC all-freshman that year, ranking third among the league’s first-year newcomers with 61 tackles.

Bryant had 15 tackles against SEMO, a great number, but the game comes with an asterisk because it’s an FCS opponent. Texas represents a bigger test, and the Rebels need consistency from Bryant in the absence of Nkemdiche.

Bryant appeared in 13 games last year as a reserve. His playing time was down, and so were his tackles as he finished with 28. He did have 3.5 tackles for loss.

Defensive coordinator Dave Wommack was high on Bryant — not for the first time — after practice Tuesday.

β€œAll through fall camp and spring he really showed out. He’s played extremely well. We missed him the first game especially when Denzel wasn’t able to go. He showed a little bit last week, against – I don’t want to take anything away from them but a lesser opponent – but he’s been a real factor, and I think the truth will come out this week.”

After Freeze gets Mack Brown fired, he sets his sites on Les Miles, who is losing momentum. The scathing reports out of Stillwater has the powers at LSU more than a little worried.

Consider the sharkfins game in Austin a job interview for Hugh Freeze.
He leaves the cupboards full and the school on probation.

    • STEVE

Cid you’ve had Freeze interviewing for TSBU and Texas all in one week … You’ve been hitting the sauce too much this week. Lay off for one da and given your liver a rest dude.

  • REB

Consider the mangy dawgs game in Auburn a fairwell for Dan Mullens. He leaves the cupboards empty and the school on 2 years probation, a follow up investigation looming, and a scandal for 2 MI$$ $TATE players. Man o Man!!!!

I never said Freeze was going to Texas State Baptist University. It just makes sense that Texas would be interested in Freeze and what better way to see his offense than against your team. Mack Brown is gone at the end of this season. Back room agreements happen now, but won’t get announced til January.

I really can’t picture Jill Freeze being happy raising her daughters in Austin, Texas.

If Freeze is Texas bound, who is the next coach at Ole Miss. Lane Kiffin will be available or maybe Petrino?

    • Roger Davis

The theory of Hugh Freeze getting coaches fired is interesting. Bobby Petrino would probably be the perfect fit at Miss. State should Ole Miss win the Egg Bowl. The Pony’s nearby and that would certainly give new meaning to ‘Hookers on a Harley’.

Sorry Cid, the Freeze to Texas theory “ain’t even in the cards”…If he had a few more years of success, it could be possible, but he’s not even on their radar…The Horns are going to go high profile on this one…my sources in Austin say they will be going after the biggest fish in the college football pond and money is going to be no object….They may not get him but it won’t be because of lack of the cash…..

  • Cid Riley

The current trend in college football is to hire a offensive coordinator or a young coach..I believe Texas would definitely look at Freeze as well as TexasTech coach Kingsbury.

    • Missouri Rebel

That is the current trend but Texas won’t go “trendy”. The claim that everything is bigger in Texas applies mainly to their ego and ego will play a role in this one. It’s going to be a big hire to make a big splash.
You might rile up some of the locals with the talk to Freeze as a candidate but you’re too savvy to believe it…Names like Gruden, Peterson, dare I say Saban will be the targets for that job.
