Monday Morning Update

Spanning the globe on a Monday morning. …

From Austin, the American-Statesman writes that nothing really looked new for Texas’ new-look defense. The SB Nation Texas blog ponders a Longhorns’ blowout — the wrong end of a blowout — at Memorial Stadium. …

Further south in Texas on Saturday was this season’s Game of the Century. Recapping the Alabama-Texas A&M game here. In spite of Johnny Manziel’s upbeat comments postgame — sounds like he’s talking again, at least for a day — CBS says the loss may have cost A&M a shot at the national championship.

All the press box TVs were tuned to the events unfolding in College Station when we arrived at Memorial Stadium in advance of the Ole Miss-Texas game. I heard one orange-shirted staffer call out “roll Tide” and wondered if that was the first time that had been uttered in Austin since the 2009 BCS title game.

The Tide and Aggies produced CBS’ best TV rating in 23 years.

It was a big win for Alabama, but as’s Michael Casagrande writes, it wasn’t exactly a clean win.

From Auburn, the Tigers’ running backs didn’t dominate against Mississippi State but got it done at the game’s most important times in helping Auburn win 24-20 and snap a 10-game SEC losing streak. …

From Columbia (the Missouri one), Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel was on the company chopper for high school football Friday night. That chopper gets up pretty high in this one.

From outside the SEC, The Omaha World-Herald says hopelessness has arrived early this year for Nebraska. …

From Eugene, what might an Oregon-Alabama championship game look like? We could be headed that way. …
