Reviving the tempo

The 57 plays run by Hugh Freeze’s tempo offense at Alabama last week matched the fewest number of plays run in his 17 games as head coach at Ole Miss.

Eight times in 13 games last season the Rebels ran 70 plays or more.

“We were doing pretty well with that until last week,” Freeze said.

Freeze compared Alabama’s approach of extending its defensive ends to make it harder to run on the perimeter to last year’s game against Georgia. The Bulldogs also held Ole Miss to 57 plays.

“It reminded me of Georgia. They were able to run some base stuff and win,” he said.

Earlier this week Freeze said the most plays his team has run in a game was 117 while he was head coach at Lambuth.

The most plays his Ole Miss team has run has been 90, and that was in a 27-26 loss to Vanderbilt last year.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn will also push the tempo but says he doesn’t remember running 117 plays in a game.

“No, probably not, not in one game. You remember games where you have a lot, but 117 is an awful lot,” Malzahn said. “We both rely on tempo. I think we’ll be somewhat familiar on both sides with the styles.”

Auburn is not Alabama. But, this could be a competitive game only because it’s being played at Auburn. The Rebels need this win going into next week’s contest with the Aggies.
If Bo is able to execute the same offense which beat Texas by 3 touch downs, I say the Rebels leave the Plains 4-1.
